Hello Steve,
I just wanted to say thank you for the advice you gave over the telephone. This has resulted in us finding the wiring fault inside the light fitting and fixing it. One of the wires going into a plastic connector had melted. My husband replaced this piece and when we connected the new transformer the light worked again.
